The Master of Arts in Theological Studies focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of behavioural health issues for individuals, couples, families, groups, and Christian communities.

About the Theological Studies Programme

Testament Theological Seminary’s 45-hour Master of Arts in Marriage, Family and Pastoral Counselling programme prepares individuals to help individuals and families, regardless of their home structure or circumstances. The programme focuses on behavioral science, mental health counseling, and addressing dysfunctional family interactions. Family counseling aims to improve communication and resolve conflicts, and graduates can help modern families and couples navigate life changes and challenging times. Topics covered include family science, parent-child therapy, group therapy, human sexuality and sex therapy, and more.

Programme Outcomes

By completing the Master of Arts in Theological Studies, students will be able to demonstrate:

  1. The skills to critically analyse themselves and their clients in diverse ecological situations, thereby fostering cultural competence in therapists.
  2. The accuracy to identify and critically analyse theory to address a wide range of clinical counselling and mental health issues.
  3. Culturally competent counsellors who understand socio-cultural complexities associated with diagnosis, assessment, and research.
  4. Students in the programme will be able to understand, identify, and demonstrate the foundational components of culturally competent counselling in marriage, family and within Christian communities.

Programme Information

Master of Arts in Marriage, Family and Pastoral Counselling

In order to meet the current licensure requirements of the regional or international (from AMPC to RMPC), and to respond to developing nationwide trends toward inter-regional/international licensure portability, while continuing to provide the integrative couples and family focus of Testament’s MA in Marriage, Family and Pastoral Counselling degree, the curriculum is built around a two year, 45 credit hour design.

Part-time students will tailor their course selection with their advisor. International students with a student visa and studying in person must begin the degree in Alpha (Jan) semester. At the end of your programme and clinical professional practice, you will become an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist before you sit for your licensure exams to become a RMFT.

  • O-level (Secondary School Education) result (not more than two sittings).
  • Two-year Master of Arts (MA) Degree: Any Bachelor’s Degree or Graduate Diploma official/unofficial transcript or its equivalent, with at least a 2.75 GPA on a 4-point scale or 3.5 on a 5-point scale or a 2.2 class award from a recognized Bible College, Seminary or University.
  • Chest/Waist-to-head clean corporate picture (for online/virtual students).
  • Three (3) passport photos (for in-class students).
  • Health Report or medical Fitness Certificate (for in-class students).
  • National ID (for in-class students).
  • Two (2) recommendation letters. One from your Church and the other from your place or work, school or others (for all students).

Other Requirements:

  • Submit a personal Statement of Purpose (SOP) of no more than two pages.
  • Submit a research proposal when applying to TTS.
  • Find and contact a Research Supervisor(s)/mentor(s) in your field/area of specialisation.

Testament Theological Seminary offers a variety of options for course delivery. The section code designations can assist in determining the delivery modality for the courses.

  • Face to Face: Courses offered on a weekly basis in a classroom setting only on our Makurdi campus.
  • Hybrid: Semester-long courses with both online and in-person requirements.
  • Independent Study: An independently arranged research course in a subject area or topic not covered by a course currently listed in the academic catalog.
  • Independent Course: An independent arrangement of a course currently listed in the academic catalog and completed outside of the classroom, as contracted between faculty and student. Independent courses are registered with the catalog course number and are graded per the catalog course description.
  • Intensive: Course may meet once or twice a semester for multiple days. The majority of the learning will take place during the required in-person portion of this class.
  • Online: Courses offered completely online with no specific synchronous meeting requirement.
  • Synchronous: Courses offered online with regular weekly meetings at a set time. Some courses are cross-listed with an in-person section.
  • Travel Courses: Courses that include face-to-face instruction at a location other than the approved campus and extensions. Some travel courses may include a domestic or overseas cultural immersion or attendance at a significant conference related to course content.

The estimated tuition and fees for the MA in Marriage and Family Therapy totals $3,600.00, or 45 credit hours at a cost of $80.00 per credit hour for international students; while a resident Nigerian student pays a total of 1,200,000, or 15 courses at a cost of ₦80,000 per course.

  • Clinical Lab: Every student in the programme has access to the clinical lab for their professional practice. These clinical labs are located in different countries and different states.
  • Provision of ICT: You can access free Wi-Fi throughout the Seminary or the Clinical Lab, so you can work from anywhere. If you don’t want to carry a laptop around, just use one of the Seminary’s PCs.
  • TWO Programmes: Testament, Witness and Order (TWO) Conferences hold quarterly where Christian ministers, pastors, students, and Kingdom orators come in to talk on topics in the Christendom and other spheres of influence.
  • Publication Centre: After your research work at the clinical labs, Students will submit and publish their articles at the African Journal of Kingdom Education (AJOKE) seamlessly.
  • Two (2) years of full-time or part-time studies.
  • There is a possibility that some students may spill their completion of Master Theses into the third year.
  • The mode of study can be On-campus (classroom) or Open and Distance Learning (online).
